For Web Designers

If you would like to offer your services as a Web designer, we'd love to have you on board.

What's in it for you?

Because this is not-for-profit work, we don't pay our designers. However, there are benefits that we can offer, particularly if you're just starting out in Web design.

Our Tomorrow is part of First Step Communications, a professional Web design company that has developed over 200 Web sites for clients around the world. If you work with us, you'll be able to tap into that depth of experience – including these benefits:

  • We can offer you valuable hands-on experience working with real-world clients.
  • We won't throw you in at the deep end! We'll work closely with you to make sure that you feel comfortable dealing with the clients and their requirements.
  • You'll be able to include the Web sites that you create in your own portfolio, which builds your credibility when applying for jobs or developing your own business.
  • You'll be able to work with our content management system, which allows you to create professional Web sites quickly and easily.

And, of course, you get the chance to make a contribution to the community.

What sort of commitment is required?

We're trying to make this as easy as possible for everybody involved, so we're not asking for a huge commitment.

After you apply, we'll keep your name on our records. Then, when a potential project comes along, we'll either approach you directly or send an e-mail to all our designers, asking who would like to do the project. Either way, there is no obligation on your part – you simply take on the projects that you can fit in to your other work.

What skills do you require?

The main technical skill required is the ability to do graphic design. The client will probably have their own logo, colours and style – especially if they already have brochures and business cards – and we have to design a Web site that matches this "branding". This includes a header, menu buttons, and so on.

Apart from that, most of the work is cut-and-paste! The client will provide the text for their Web site, and it's our job to insert it into the appropriate Web pages.

How long does a typical project take?

In a perfect world, a client would give us all the text, exact specifications for the graphic design, and all their contact information. Given all of this, you could easily create an entire Web site in a day – or less!

In reality, though, there are usually some delays. The client might take some time gathering all the text; they will have to get approval for using photos; they will take time to decide on the graphics; and so on. So a typical project takes a couple of weeks. But most of that time is spent waiting, so you will have plenty of time to work on other projects during that time.

How do I get started?

E-mail us at , so that we can keep you on our list of designers.
